Discount codes
A creator discount code like SAM15 gives the creator’s audience a reason to buy, and it gives you a count of the sales that creator drove. Creator Jam creates the code in Shopify for you and keeps it attached to the deal. Its uses then appear next to what you paid on the ROI page.
You need a connected Shopify store with the write_discounts scope.
Set a creator’s defaults
Section titled “Set a creator’s defaults”If you create codes for the same creator regularly, save their defaults once and skip the typing.
- Open the creator’s channel and select Edit Channel.
- Under Discount Defaults, set a Code Prefix (for example
SAM) and a Default % Off (for example15). - Select Save Changes.
Both values fill in automatically whenever you create a code for that creator. You can change them for any single code.
Create a code
Section titled “Create a code”Codes are created from a deal’s conversation, so each one is tied to that deal.
The Create Discount Code dialog for Sam Builds Stuff: SAM15 at 15% off, ending in 30 days.
- Open the conversation and find the Discount Codes section.
- Select Create Code.
- Enter the Code, such as
SAM15. Codes can only contain letters, numbers and hyphens, and Creator Jam capitalizes them as you type. - Enter the % Off Order, from 1 to 100.
- Choose an Expiry: No expiry, 30 days (the default), 3 months, 6 months or Custom date. The code stops working at the end of the day it expires.
- Select Create Code.
The code is live in Shopify straight away. In the conversation it shows a copy button, the percentage off and the expiry date.
If a code with that name already exists in your store, Shopify rejects it and the dialog shows Shopify’s message. Choose a different code.
What the code looks like in Shopify
Section titled “What the code looks like in Shopify”Creator Jam creates a percentage-off code with these settings:
- It takes the percentage off the whole order, on every product, for any customer.
- It starts right away and ends on the expiry date, if you set one.
- There’s no limit on total uses, and a customer can use it more than once.
- Its title is the code itself, such as
SAM15. - It’s tagged
Creator Jam Code, so you can tell Creator Jam’s codes apart in Shopify.
Creator Jam can only create percentage-off codes. If you want a fixed amount off, free shipping, a minimum purchase, a usage limit or specific products, create the code in Creator Jam first and then edit it in your Shopify admin. Creator Jam still tracks its uses and revenue. It keeps showing the percentage and expiry you originally entered, though, so update those in Shopify only.
Codes you made in Shopify
Section titled “Codes you made in Shopify”Creator Jam can only track codes it created. You can’t attach a code that was made directly in Shopify to a conversation, so its uses won’t appear on the Discount Codes page or the ROI page. For new deals, create the code from the conversation.
Delete a code
Section titled “Delete a code”Select the trash icon (Delete discount code) next to the code in the conversation. The code is removed from Creator Jam and deleted from Shopify, so it stops working at checkout immediately.
The Discount Codes page
Section titled “The Discount Codes page”Discount Codes in the sidebar lists every code created across all your conversations.
The Discount Codes page lists every code created from a conversation, with its uses and revenue from Shopify.
- The copy icon copies the code.
- Uses and Revenue are read live from Shopify each time the page loads, and cover the code's whole life.
- Select a row to open the deal's conversation. That's where you create and delete codes.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Channel | The creator the code belongs to |
| Code | The code, with a copy button |
| % Off | The percentage you set when you created it |
| Uses | How many times the code has been used, according to Shopify |
| Revenue | Shopify’s total sales from orders that used the code |
| Expiry | The end date, or No expiry |
| Created | When the code was created |
Uses and Revenue are read live from Shopify each time the page loads, and they cover the code’s whole life. Select a row to open the deal’s conversation. You can’t create codes on this page.
How codes feed the ROI page
Section titled “How codes feed the ROI page”The ROI page has a Code Uses tab. For the dates you choose, it finds each deal marked Published with a publish date in that range that has a discount code, and lists one row per deal.
- Code Uses and Revenue come from Shopify and count every use of the code, not only uses within your dates. The dates decide which deals are included.
- Spend is the deal’s rate, and CPA is that spend divided by the deal’s code uses. If a deal has two codes, such as
SAM15andSAMVIP, its rate is counted once against the uses of both. The Code column shows each code with its own uses. - The cards at the top add these up: Total Creator Spend, Total Code Uses, Revenue and Blended CPA.
- If Shopify can’t be read, the tab says Code uses are unavailable right now. and shows “—” instead of 0 uses.
A code only shows up once its deal is Published and has a publish date in the range you picked.
Why code uses aren’t added to other revenue
Section titled “Why code uses aren’t added to other revenue”Code Uses is one of three separate attribution sources on the ROI page, alongside the Fairing survey and GoAffPro affiliates. The same sale can appear in more than one of them. For example, a customer might use SAM15 and also tell your post-purchase survey that they heard about you from Sam. Adding the sources together would count that sale twice. So Creator Jam shows them side by side and never sums them. How attribution works explains each source.
If you use GoAffPro, Creator Jam also uses these codes to work out which creator an affiliate’s coupon belongs to.
